The House of Atreus

The curse of the House of Atreus began with Tantalus, who tested the gods' omniscience by serving them his own son, Pelops, at a banquet. Though the gods restored Pelops to life, the lineage was tainted by hubris and cruelty. Pelops later secured his kingdom through the murder of a charioteer, who cursed him with his dying breath. This darkness descended upon Pelops' sons, Atreus and Thyestes, who fought a bitter war for the throne. In a horrific act of revenge, Atreus murdered Thyestes' children and served them to their father at a feast. The cycle of blood reached its peak with Agamemnon, Atreus' son, who sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to appease the gods before the Trojan War. Upon his return, he was murdered by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. Finally, Agamemnon’s son Orestes killed his mother to avenge his father, bringing the Furies upon himself. The cycle only ended when Athena established a court of law in Athens, acquitting Orestes and replacing blood-feuds with civic justice.

The moral
Personal vengeance creates an endless cycle of suffering that can only be broken by the impartial rule of law and divine mercy.
