Pwyll, the Lord of Dyfed, was hunting in the woods of Glyn Cuch when he drove his hounds onto a stag killed by another pack—white-bodied dogs with red ears. Their owner was Arawn, King of Annwn, the Underworld. To atone for the perceived insult, Pwyll agreed to trade places and appearances with Arawn for exactly one year, promising to defeat Arawn's rival, Hafgan. Throughout that year, Pwyll ruled Annwn with such integrity that he even refrained from intimacy with Arawn’s beautiful wife out of respect for his host. After slaying Hafgan with a single blow, Pwyll returned to his own realm. Upon learning of Pwyll’s restraint and success, Arawn became his eternal friend. Later, Pwyll encountered the lady Rhiannon, who appeared on a white horse that could not be overtaken. After three days of pursuit, he spoke to her, and she revealed she had come to marry him instead of her unwanted suitor, Gwawl. Despite a trick that almost cost him his bride, Pwyll used a magical bag to trap Gwawl and finally married Rhiannon, securing the throne of Dyfed and fathering the hero Pryderi.
Integrity and the ability to keep one's word are the hallmarks of a true leader and the foundation of lasting friendship.
