Isis and the Secret Name of Ra

In the golden age of the gods, Ra was the undisputed king of the universe, but as eons passed, he grew old and his strength began to fade. Isis, the most cunning of the goddesses, craved the absolute power that Ra held—a power hidden within his secret name, which no one knew. One day, as Ra walked through his kingdom, a drop of his saliva fell to the earth. Isis gathered the moist clay and fashioned it into a venomous serpent, imbuing it with her magic. She placed the snake in Ra’s path. When the sun god passed, the serpent struck, its venom coursing through his veins. Because the snake was made of his own essence, Ra could not heal himself. In agony, he called upon the other gods for aid, but none could soothe the fire in his blood. Isis approached him, promising to cast a healing spell, but only on one condition: he must reveal his secret name. Ra tried to deceive her by reciting his many titles—Khepri in the morning, Ra at noon, and Atum in the evening—but the pain only worsened. Finally, unable to bear the torment, Ra allowed his secret name to pass from his heart into hers. Isis healed the sun god, but from that day on, she possessed his ultimate power, which she used to secure the throne for her son, Horus.
