Prophet Yunus was sent by Allah to guide the people of Nineveh, but they stubbornly refused to listen. Frustrated and losing patience, Yunus departed the city without divine permission, heading toward the sea. He boarded a crowded ship, but a violent storm soon threatened to sink the vessel. The sailors, believing someone on board had incurred God's displeasure, cast lots to decide who should be thrown overboard to save the others. Three times the lot fell on Yunus. Realizing this was a divine sign, he jumped into the churning waves, where a massive whale swallowed him whole by Allah's command. In the suffocating darkness of the whale’s belly, Yunus spent days in deep reflection. He realized his error in abandoning his mission and cried out with sincere repentance: 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' Allah heard his humble prayer and commanded the whale to eject him safely onto a distant shore. Weak and exhausted, Yunus was nurtured back to health under the shade of a gourd plant before returning to Nineveh. To his amazement, he found that his entire community had repented and embraced the truth in his absence.
True repentance and sincere prayer can provide a way out of even the darkest circumstances, and one must never lose patience in fulfilling their duties.
He recited the 'Ayat-e-Karima,' which translates to: 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' It is considered a powerful prayer for seeking forgiveness.
He became frustrated with the people of Nineveh because they repeatedly rejected his message of monotheism. He left the city in anger without waiting for Allah's permission to depart.
Islamic traditions vary on the exact duration, with some suggesting three days and others suggesting forty. The specific time is less important than the spiritual transformation he underwent during that period.
Unlike many other nations mentioned in religious texts, the people of Nineveh saw the signs of coming punishment and sincerely repented. Because of their faith, Allah spared them from destruction.
