Theseus and Aegeus

Greek Myths

Save
Theseus and Aegeus

King Aegeus of Athens left a sword and a pair of sandals beneath a massive boulder, instructing his wife Aethra that if their son could lift it, he should journey to Athens. Growing into a powerful youth, Theseus easily moved the stone and set off to find his father. Upon arrival, he was nearly poisoned by the sorceress Medea, but Aegeus recognized the sword at the last moment and saved him. Years later, Theseus volunteered to sail to Crete to slay the Minotaur and end the tribute of human sacrifices. He promised his father that if he returned successful, his ship would fly white sails instead of black. Though Theseus defeated the beast and escaped the Labyrinth, his joy clouded his memory. He forgot to swap the sails. Standing atop the cliffs of Cape Sounion, Aegeus saw the black sails on the horizon. Overwhelmed by grief at his son's perceived death, the King threw himself into the sea, which has been called the Aegean Sea ever since.

The moral
Victory is incomplete without mindfulness; a small oversight can lead to an irreversible tragedy.
