The Siege of Otrar

In the year 1218, a great caravan of four hundred merchants arrived at the gates of Otrar, a thriving city in the Khwarazmian Empire. They came under the banner of Genghis Khan, seeking trade and peace. However, the city's governor, Inalchuq, blinded by greed and suspicion, accused the merchants of being spies. He seized their riches and put them all to death. When Genghis Khan heard of this atrocity, he did not immediately strike. He sent three ambassadors to Sultan Muhammad II, demanding that Inalchuq be handed over for justice. The Sultan responded by killing the lead envoy and shaving the beards of the others—a final, fatal insult. The Great Khan’s wrath was ignited. In 1219, a Mongol horde of 200,000 men descended upon Otrar like a desert storm. For five months, the city held out behind its massive walls, but the Mongol siege engines and relentless tactics eventually broke the defenses. Inalchuq retreated to the inner citadel, fighting until his last arrow was spent and he was throwing bricks from the roof. Captured alive, legend says he was executed by having molten silver poured into his eyes and ears—a symbolic punishment for his greed. Otrar was leveled, and the Khwarazmian Empire was soon erased from the map.
