Prince Ivan's three sisters were married to powerful bird-spirits: a Falcon, an Eagle, and a Raven. Left alone, Ivan set out on a journey and met the beautiful warrior queen, Marya Morevna. They fell in love and married, but when Marya went to war, she left Ivan in charge of her palace with one strict instruction: never open the door to the dungeon. Overcome by curiosity, Ivan opened the door and found a withered old man chained to the wall. This was Koschei the Deathless. Taking pity on the prisoner's pleas for water, Ivan gave him three buckets. The water restored Koschei’s strength; he broke his chains, vanished in a whirlwind, and snatched Marya Morevna away. Devastated, Ivan pursued them. Twice he tried to rescue her, but Koschei’s horse was too fast, and Ivan was killed. His bird brothers-in-law used the water of life to resurrect him. To defeat Koschei, Ivan sought a horse as fast as the wind from the terrifying Baba Yaga. By showing kindness to a bee, a bird, and a lion, Ivan received their help to complete Baba Yaga’s impossible tasks. He fled with a magical foal, reunited with Marya, and used his new steed to outrun and finally slay Koschei, ending the sorcerer's reign of terror forever.
True strength lies in humility and kindness to others, as curiosity without caution can unleash great evil.
The story teaches that actions have consequences and that curiosity must be tempered with wisdom. It also emphasizes that kindness to the natural world often provides the help needed to overcome impossible odds.
Koschei is a powerful sorcerer who cannot be killed by conventional means because his soul is hidden inside a needle, inside an egg, inside a duck. He represents an eternal, malevolent force of nature.
Ivan acted out of misplaced compassion after Koschei begged for water to quench a centuries-long thirst. He did not realize that by being merciful to a monster, he was enabling the monster to reclaim its dark powers.
Unlike many passive princesses, Marya Morevna is a formidable warrior and queen who has already conquered her enemies before the story begins. She is portrayed as an equal or even superior to the hero in strength.
