Batraz the Steel Hero

Born from the shoulder of his father Khamyts, Batraz was a child of magic and destiny. To make him invincible, the celestial smith Kurdalagon tempered the boy in a furnace of dragon’s blood and white-hot fire, turning his flesh into indestructible steel—all except for his knees. As the greatest of the Nart heroes, Batraz was a whirlwind of vengeance, wielding a massive, sentient sword that no other man could lift. He famously avenged his father’s murder by destroying the fortress of the giants and challenging the corrupt Nart elders who had wronged his kin. However, his power grew so immense that he eventually challenged the heavens and the gods themselves. Realizing that his physical form was too heavy for the earth to bear and his spirit too restless for peace, Batraz finally commanded the last surviving Narts to throw his magical sword into the Black Sea. When the blade finally touched the depths, the water turned blood-red, the earth shook, and the Steel Hero finally passed into legend.

The moral
Even the most invincible power must be tempered by humility, as unchecked vengeance and pride can isolate even the greatest hero from the world they protect.

Questions about this story

What is the moral of Batraz the Steel Hero?

The story teaches that absolute power and unyielding vengeance lead to solitude. While Batraz's strength was unmatched, his inability to find peace with the divine led to his eventual tragic end.

How was Batraz born?

In the Nart sagas, Batraz was born from a magical growth or 'hump' on his father Khamyts' back. This occurred after the lady of the waters breathed on Khamyts, transferring the child to him before she departed.

Why is Batraz called the Steel Hero?

He is called the Steel Hero because the celestial smith Kurdalagon tempered his body in a furnace using dragon’s blood and divine heat. This process turned his skin into impenetrable steel, making him immune to mortal weapons.

How did Batraz die?

Batraz could only die once his magical sword was thrown into the sea. After several failed attempts by his companions, the sword was cast into the waves, turning the sea red and allowing his soul to depart.
