The Woman Who Fell from the Sky: Native American Legends Story and Mea

Save

Long ago, in the world above the sky, a woman known as Sky Woman fell through a hole created by an uprooted celestial tree. As she tumbled toward the endless primordial waters below, the birds and sea creatures looked up in alarm. A flock of geese rose together, catching her on their soft wings to break her fall. The Great Turtle offered his massive shell as a place for her to rest, but she needed land to survive. One by one, the animals dove into the deep to bring up mud. While the stronger animals failed, the tiny Muskrat finally returned with a small morsel of earth in his paw. Sky Woman took the mud and placed it on the turtle's back. As she walked in circles and sang, the earth expanded, growing into the lush, green world we inhabit today, supported forever by the turtle.
