The Descent of Ninigi

Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, looked upon the chaotic earthly realm and decreed that her grandson, Ninigi-no-Mikoto, should descend to rule and bring order. Before his departure, she bestowed upon him the Three Sacred Treasures: the Yata no Kagami mirror representing wisdom, the Yasakani no Magatama jewel representing benevolence, and the Kusanagi no Tsurugi sword representing valor. Ninigi parted the thick clouds of heaven and descended to the peak of Mount Takachiho in Kyushu. Along the way, he was guided by the formidable deity Sarutahiko at the heavenly crossroads. Upon reaching the earth, Ninigi established his palace and married the beautiful Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of cherry blossoms. His arrival marked the transition from the age of gods to the age of men, establishing the divine lineage of the Emperors of Japan and weaving the heavens forever into the fabric of the islands.
