Krishna Lifts Govardhan Hill

In the village of Braj, the people were preparing their annual offerings for Lord Indra, the king of gods and rain. Young Krishna, observing the elaborate preparations, questioned the tradition. He argued that the villagers should instead worship Govardhan Hill, for it was the fertile land, lush forests, and cooling streams of the mountain that truly sustained their cattle and livelihoods. Persuaded by Krishna's wisdom, the villagers offered their prayers to the mountain instead. Enraged by this perceived slight, Lord Indra unleashed a terrifying storm upon Braj, with torrential rains and thunderous bolts intended to wash the village away. As the people cried out in fear, Krishna calmly walked to Govardhan Hill and lifted the entire mountain upon the pinky finger of his left hand. He held it aloft like a giant umbrella, sheltering every person and animal for seven days and seven nights while the storm raged harmlessly above. Realizing that the child was no ordinary boy but the Supreme Lord himself, Indra’s pride shattered. He withdrew the clouds and knelt before Krishna, seeking forgiveness for his arrogance.
