Story Summary

Explore the legendary origin of the Golden City as Krishna builds Dwaraka to protect the Yadavas from the relentless attacks of Jarasandha and Kalayavana.

For years, the kingdom of Mathura faced relentless attacks from Jarasandha, the vengeful King of Magadha. Though Krishna and Balarama successfully repelled seventeen invasions, the constant warfare took a heavy toll on the Yadava people. When Jarasandha allied with the powerful mlechha king Kalayavana, Krishna realized that Mathura could no longer guarantee the safety of his subjects. To protect his people, Krishna summoned Vishwakarma, the divine architect of the gods. He requested a city that would be impregnable, beautiful, and vast enough to house all the Yadavas. Overnight, in the middle of the western sea near the coast of Saurashtra, Vishwakarma constructed a magnificent city of gold. It featured massive gates, intricate gardens, and palaces adorned with precious jewels. Using his divine power, Krishna transported the sleeping citizens of Mathura to this new sanctuary. Because of its many gates, the city was named Dwaraka, the 'Gateway City.' By strategically retreating from the battlefield to establish this kingdom, Krishna earned the name 'Ranchod,' demonstrating that true leadership prioritizes the preservation of life over the vanity of pride.
