Malik Bhago, a powerful and wealthy local official who had amassed his fortune through corruption and exploitation, was holding a grand sacrificial feast called a 'Brahm Bhoj' for all holy men. When the Guru did not attend, Bhago was insulted and demanded he come. Faced with Bhago's arrogance, Guru Nanak took a piece of Bhai Lalo's coarse, dry bread in one hand and a rich, fried delicacy from Malik Bhago's feast in the other. He squeezed them both simultaneously. To the amazement of the crowd, pure white milk trickled from Lalo's simple bread, while drops of red blood dripped from Bhago's rich food. The Guru explained that Lalo's food was earned through 'Kirat' (honest work), while Bhago's wealth was built on the blood and suffering of the poor. Malik Bhago fell at the Guru's feet, begging for forgiveness and vowing to live an honest life.
