Story Summary

Discover how the river monster Sha Wujing finds redemption in Sandy Joins the Group. A pivotal moment in the Journey to the West legend of the Flowing Sands.

As Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and Zhu Bajie reached the banks of the treacherous Flowing Sands River, they found a body of water so light that even a bird's feather would sink to the bottom. Suddenly, a hideous monster with red hair and a necklace of skulls erupted from the waves, attacking the group. Zhu Bajie engaged the beast in a fierce underwater struggle, but neither could gain the upper hand. Sun Wukong, though powerful, was frustrated by his inability to fight effectively beneath the waves. Recognizing the monster's divine origins, they sought the help of the Bodhisattva Guanyin. Her disciple, Muzha, descended to the river and revealed the monster's true identity: Sha Wujing, the former Curtain-Lifting General of Heaven, who had been exiled and cursed for breaking a crystal cup. Upon learning that Tang Sanzang was the holy monk sent by the Emperor, Sha Wujing immediately knelt in repentance. He was accepted as the third disciple, his head was shaved, and he was given the name Sandy. To prove his devotion, he used his magical gourd and the skulls of his former victims to create a vessel that allowed the pilgrims to cross the impossible river, finally completing the trio of supernatural protectors.

The Moral

True redemption is found through humility and the commitment to serve a higher, more virtuous purpose.

I am willing to follow the master, wash away my sins, and seek the true scriptures.

Fun Fact

In the original 16th-century novel, Sandy's necklace of nine skulls actually belonged to the previous nine incarnations of Tang Sanzang, whom Sandy had killed and eaten before his conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the moral of Sandy Joins the Group?

The story teaches that no matter how far one has fallen or what sins they have committed, redemption is possible through sincere repentance and service to a noble cause. It emphasizes that discipline and spiritual devotion can transform a destructive nature into a protective one.

Who was Sandy before he became a monster?

Before his exile, Sandy was the Curtain-Lifting General in the Celestial Court. He held a position of high honor, standing near the Jade Emperor's chariot, until a single accident led to his downfall.

Why was Sha Wujing punished by Heaven?

He was punished for accidentally breaking a valuable crystal cup during the Peach Banquet. For this minor mistake, he was beaten, exiled to the mortal realm, and cursed to have swords pierce his chest every seven days.

What is unique about the Flowing Sands River?

The Flowing Sands River is a magical body of water spanning 800 miles where the water is so thin and 'weak' that nothing can float on it. This made it an impassable barrier for the pilgrims without Sandy's divine assistance.

What weapon does Sandy use?

Sandy wields a Magic Wood Staff, often depicted as a Crescent Moon Spade or a Monk's Spade. It was fashioned from a branch of a divine laurel tree on the moon and is incredibly heavy and durable.

What role does Sandy play in the pilgrimage?

Sandy is often the most steady, polite, and obedient of the three disciples. While Wukong and Bajie frequently argue, Sandy acts as the peacekeeper and the primary protector of the luggage and the master's safety.
